El BEA sitúa el déficit por cuenta corriente en 246.000 millones de dólares. La publicación corresponde al segundo trimestre de 2026 y contiene revisiones del primero.

El déficit por cuenta corriente de Estados Unidos aumentó 33.400 millones de dólares, un 15,7%, hasta 246.000 millones en el segundo trimestre de 2026, informó el Bureau of Economic Analysis el 24 de septiembre. La cifra revisada del primer trimestre fue de 212.600 millones. En proporción al PIB nominal, el déficit pasó del 2,7% al 3,0%.

La ampliación respondió principalmente al mayor déficit de bienes. La reducción de los déficits de rentas primarias y de transferencias corrientes compensó parte de ese movimiento. Las exportaciones de bienes y servicios, junto con los ingresos recibidos de residentes extranjeros, aumentaron 58.800 millones, hasta 1,44 billones de dólares. Las importaciones y los ingresos pagados al exterior crecieron 92.200 millones, hasta 1,69 billones. Aquí, un billón equivale a un millón de millones.

La cuenta financiera registró transacciones netas de −369.700 millones de dólares, que el BEA describe como endeudamiento neto de Estados Unidos frente al exterior. Las transacciones incrementaron los activos financieros de residentes estadounidenses en el extranjero en 663.300 millones y los pasivos frente a residentes extranjeros en 978.900 millones.

La posición de inversión internacional neta terminó el trimestre en −22,42 billones de dólares, frente a −21,27 billones al final del primero. Los activos ascendieron a 46,97 billones y los pasivos a 69,39 billones. Esa posición es un saldo acumulado; el déficit por cuenta corriente mide flujos durante un periodo. No son magnitudes intercambiables.

Los activos aumentaron 3,72 billones durante el trimestre, impulsados principalmente por cambios de precios de 3,03 billones y por las transacciones financieras. Los pasivos aumentaron 4,87 billones, con 3,95 billones procedentes de cambios de precios. Por tanto, atribuir todo el deterioro de la posición neta a nuevos flujos de financiación omitiría el papel de las valoraciones.

El BEA también revisó datos del primer trimestre. El saldo por cuenta corriente pasó de una estimación preliminar de −226.800 millones a −212.600 millones de dólares. ## Qué conviene seguir

Para seguir las necesidades de financiación externa, resulta útil observar conjuntamente el saldo corriente, la composición de los flujos y los cambios de valoración. Este informe trimestral no permite deducir por sí solo la dirección próxima del dólar o de los rendimientos del Tesoro. Esa lectura requiere contrastarlo con precios, política monetaria y nuevas publicaciones.

The U.S. current-account deficit resulting from international economic transactions widened by $33.4 billion, or 15.7 percent, to $246.0 billion in the second quarter of 2026, according to statistics released today by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The revised first-quarter deficit was $212.6 billion.

The second-quarter deficit was 3.0 percent of current-dollar gross domestic product, up from 2.7 percent in the first quarter.

The $33.4 billion widening of the current-account deficit in the second quarter reflected an expanded deficit on goods that was partly offset by reduced deficits on primary (earned) income and on secondary income (current transfers).

Exports of goods and services to, and income received from, foreign residents increased $58.8 billion to $1.44 trillion in the second quarter, reflecting increases in goods exports and in primary (earned) income receipts.

Imports of goods and services from, and income paid to, foreign residents increased $92.2 billion to $1.69 trillion, reflecting increases in goods imports and in primary (earned) income payments.

Capital-transfer receipts decreased $1.1 billion to $2.3 billion in the second quarter. Capital-transfer payments decreased $0.9 billion to $1.0 billion.

Net financial-account transactions were –$369.7 billion in the second quarter, reflecting net U.S. borrowing from foreign residents.1 Second-quarter transactions increased U.S. residents’ foreign financial assets by $663.3 billion and increased U.S. liabilities to foreign residents by $978.9 billion.

The U.S. net international investment position, the difference between U.S. residents’ foreign financial assets and liabilities, was –$22.42 trillion at the end of the second quarter of 2026\. Assets totaled $46.97 trillion, and liabilities totaled $69.39 trillion. At the end of the first quarter of 2026, the net investment position was –$21.27 trillion (revised).

U.S. assets increased $3.72 trillion in the second quarter, reflecting increases in all major investment categories except reserve assets. The overall increase was driven by price changes of $3.03 trillion and financial transactions of $663.3 billion.

U.S. liabilities increased $4.87 trillion in the second quarter, reflecting increases in all major investment categories, particularly portfolio investment. The overall increase was driven by price changes of $3.95 trillion and financial transactions of $978.9 billion.
